Our Mission

Planting the Orthodox Faith in South Orlando

Building an Orthodox Church for South Orlando

We are not here by accident.

St. John the Merciful Orthodox Church exists to plant the Orthodox Christian faith deeply and permanently in South Orlando.

Not as an idea.

Not as a temporary gathering.

But as a living, embodied parish — rooted in the unchanging truth of the Orthodox Christian faith:

the faith handed down by the apostles,
preserved in Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition,
confessed in the Creed,
and lived in the worship of the Church —
formed by the beauty of traditional Orthodox worship, and radiant with self-sacrificial love for God and neighbor.

We are here to stay — to build something that will outlast us.

A Church for South Orlando

We are an English-language Orthodox parish serving South Orlando and the surrounding communities of Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Lake Nona, Clermont, Winter Garden, and the neighborhoods stretching along I-4, 417, and the Florida Turnpike.

This region is not too transient.
Not too commercial.
Not too modern for the Gospel.

The ancient faith of the apostles and martyrs belongs here — even here — in the land of theme parks and roller coasters.

We do not retreat from the place where God has planted us. We live here. We raise our families here. We gather for parish events here — sometimes even at the parks themselves. Wherever we are planted, we seek to baptize what can be baptized and to bear faithful witness to Christ. It is precisely here that Christ calls His Church to take root. We do not reinvent the faith. We receive it, guard it, and hand it on.

Our mission is clear:

To make disciples.
To baptize.
To teach.
To form men, women, and children into mature members of the Body of Christ.

We are not content merely to maintain a mission. We intend to build a stable and life-giving parish — strong enough to nurture families, form saints, and, in time, give birth to new missions throughout this region. A mother parish capable of giving life

Hospitality and Beauty

This will not happen through spectacle or trend.

It will happen through hospitality and beauty.

For us, beauty is not decoration. It is the visible expression of divine truth.

We will pray well.
We will sing well.
We will worship reverently.
We will welcome every guest as someone Christ Himself has sent to us.

After every Divine Liturgy, there is a full meal.
At every service, there is intentional reverence.
In every gathering, there is a place prepared.

Beauty draws the heart.
Love binds it to Christ.

Eucharist and Mission

The Eucharist forms us.

Week by week, we receive the Body and Blood of Christ.

And in receiving Him, we are made His Body.

The altar gathers us — and the altar sends us.

What we receive in Holy Communion, we carry into our homes, our neighborhoods, and our workplaces.

The Church does not gather to remain inward.
She gathers in order to be sent.

A Permanent Home

In time, we seek to establish a permanent home in the Hunters Creek area — a visible and accessible center at the crossroads of I-4, 417, and the Florida Turnpike.

Not as a monument to ourselves. But as a stable and lasting sign that the Orthodox faith is here to stay in South Orlando.

We seek a place where:

  • Children can grow up in the faith.
  • Families can put down roots.
  • The liturgical life of the Church can flourish.
  • Future missions can be sent forth.

We are building not for a season — but for generations.

Come and See

Receive Christ at His altar. Bind your life to His Church. Plant yourself here. Give your strength, your skill, and your generosity. Build something that will endure. Build a faith with flesh. Not an abstract spirituality. Not a private religion lived alone. But a parish — with real worship, real friendships, real sacrifice.

Become what you receive.
